Grammy-nominated Los Angeles tenor saxophonist, flautist and clarinetist William Marcel "Buddy" Collette, 89, died on Sunday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after suffering shortness of breath the prior day. Collette worked with many of the jazz greats including Charles Mingus, Dexter Gordon and Chico Hamilton and taught many others. During the 1980s, he recorded on albums by LaToya Jackson, The Whispers, Midnight Star, Frank Sinatra, Buddy Rich, Freddie Hubbard, Barney Kessel, Zoot Sims and David Axelrod. He released his own album, Flute Talk, in 1988.
